19th C. Moser Enameling, Salviati Art Glass, 4 Pieces
The best of two 19th Century glass worlds are brought together in this set; Salviati Dott., Antonio was the maker of the Venetian glass, and Ludwig Moser, the Bohemian enameling house. Prior to having license to melt his own glass, Moser decorated glass created by the finest of glassworks, and Salviati's Venetian glass was often a glass of choice. Research shows that Moser took this enameling scene from a 16th Century Spanish glass enameling design, matching it exactly. It is interesting to note in this set, that Salviati, in his Venetian glass manufacture imitates early 16th and 17th Century Venetian glass patterns, and Moser imitates 16th Century Spanish glass patterns. This striking decanter is of typical thin, light-weight Venetian crystal glass, with folded-edge attached foot with sharp pontil. It is tall, at 11.75" high, and apx. 5" diameter; gilding at mouth opening, base of neck, and around knop of stem. The green, blue and yellow leaf and flower enameling provide the cartouche surrounding four different running animal figures in white enamel. The two matching cordials are crystal with a clear, sprayed-on coating presumably to protect the enameling from usage (cordials appear different from decanter in photos, but not in reality); a faint hint of gilding remains on the rim and the knop. The cordials are 4.5" high, 2.25" diameter. With the exception of some loss of gilding, the set is in excellent condition, with no damage at all, and all enameling wonderfully intact. ca. 1860-1870. $30 US Shipping.
