Rare 19th C German Facon de Venise Goblet CHF Muller
Rare lampworked Goblet, in the style of Venetian glass, which we attribute to C. H. F. Muller (1845-1912), Hamburg, Germany. Carl Heinrich Florenz Muller created ultra-thin, Facon de Venise goblets and other lampwork glass vessels skilfully copying those of the Venetian glass masters; he later created even more fanciful pieces, including the very tall, elaborately lidded goblets with animal creatures. His final area of lampwork was in the scientific instruments field, where he created some of the first X-ray tubes, abandoning the glass of the decorative arts.

The crystal bowl and foot of this goblet are swirling and lightly ribbed; the stem resembles a lyre made of the tightly twisted and textured crystal rod, with tiny tool-work cobalt decoration on the sides; a crystal flower with cobal petals is attached to the front and the back of the stem. The upper and lower knops, interestingly, are both iridescent, lightly emitting pinks, blues, and golds. There is an internal annealing crack on the inside of the upper knop, which goes all the way around, and characteristically, is only on the inside and does not extend to the outside of the glass. It will not grown any larger.

Annealing cracks are a common occurrence in blown glass, and happens when some parts of the glass cool too quickly. Although it is not actually considered damage, in the marketplace, it does lower the value of a piece. However, due to the rarity of Mr. Muller's glass, we believe this piece retains its full value. In keeping with our policies, our price is well below current market value. 7.5" (19.05 cm) tall, 2.5" (6.35 cm) rim diameter, 2.5+" (6.35+ cm) foot diameter. Excellent condition with, of course, the annealing crack as described. c. 1865-1875. $12 US Shipping.
