Style of Klimt Painting Granata Noted Costume Designer
In the style of Gustav Klimt, inspired by his famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, Dona Granata has created this sublime figure with costume modified after that worn by Adele in Klimt's portrait. The costume was designed for Gertrude, mother of Shakespeare's Hamlet, in a play produced by the Philadelphia Drama Guild, in 1977. Mixed media, including watercolor and metallics of gold and copper, on artist's card. The artist has signed it, "Granata 1977," and "3-77," lower right. Other writings lower right are "Gertrude," "Philadelphia Drama Guild, Douglas Seale Artistic Director," as well as "#1 Hamlet 1977" within the strategic turquoise brushstroke lower left. Image behind glass measures 19" x 13.25", extending to 33.50" x 27.50" in 1920s burnished giltwood and gesso frame, with two wood fillets, one of burnished copper, the other in brilliant gold. The original fabric samples chosen by the artist for Gertrude's gown, are enclosed within plastic on verso. Excellent condition. $90 US Shipping.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Dona Granata is a famous Los Angeles filmography costume designer of the first rank, having been nominated several times for Best Costume Emmys, and having won the 2001 Emmy for "Outstanding Costumes for a Miniseries" for her designs in "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadow," ABC. Her portfolio includes costume design for many 20th and 21st Century films; and she has appeared in print on many occasions, including within the book, "Costume Design, Techniques of Modern Masters," by Lynn Pecklal.

ABOUT KLIMT'S PAINTING: Klimt began drawing studies for the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (the inspiration for this 1977 Granata costume design) in about 1904, and completed the final painting in 1907. In 2006, Klimt's original portrait was sold for an amazing $135 million, said at the time, to have been the highest price ever paid for a painting.
