Luigi Maria Galea (1847-1917) is the well-known 19th Century Maltese artist of this maritime painting which appears to be a passenger-ferrying vessel, likely off the coast of Malta, in the Mediterranean, with shoreline buildings becoming faint in the background, approaching inclement weather evidenced by the darkening sky, and rough, choppy waves in the foreground. Signed "L. Galea" lower right. Oval painting measures approximately 11" x 6" (27.94 x 15.24cm), with period frame measuring 17" x 13" x 1.75" (43.18 x 33.02 x 4.44cm). Excellent condition, with the occasional age crack to the giltwood over gesso frame. c. 1890. |
